about

Ancient Air is the recording project of composer/producer, Jill Farrar.
Farrar uses novel and improvised recording techniques – fusing string and vessel resonances – to reimagine more traditional song form. Her work moves within ambient, indie-classical and experimental genres.

Born in Sydney and now based in Naarm/Melbourne, the Chinese–Australian artist is drawn to the unknown and unexplored. Her works express a desire to feel; a desire to push past the limitations of the machinery of both our minds and our tools, and create something that approaches pure feeling.

“I’ve been writing piano improvisations for many years, taking snapshot recordings on my phone and laptop. A few years ago, I went through old recordings and started writing new pieces,” said Farrar.

“I also delved deeper into the world of sound, and for about a year I did mentoring sessions with Gus Franklin (Architecture in Helsinki) on audio engineering. This helped me develop these pieces and I recorded three of them at Luke Howard’s studio in late 2019, with Gus engineering.”

"This is my first album as a solo artist, Ancient Air. It’s called Let’s Look At Things Far Away. It is all feeling. It’s without lyrics, as we know them, but it is all words. It speaks of the presence of all things that we feel and know, at all times. It is a conversation with ourselves. It is that reassuring conversation that says, ‘You are ok and you are loved. And you are love.’

"It can be hard to talk about music without words. How do we anchor ourselves in the meaning?

"But so much of life is without words. In silence, there is a richness. I suppose this album is an exploration of silence – the silence that is between everything. If you listen closely, you can hear the silence sitting still inside my music.

"Everything changes always. This album is a tribute to the thin lines of love—that tie each moment to the next.

"Thank you to the many people who supported this little kernel to become a living thing, most notably Gus Franklin, without whom this album would not exist, and Anthony Carew, without whom it would still be sitting in a cold, dark hard drive. Huge thanks to Luke Howard for letting me record in his studio, to Thea Rechner for the gorgeous album art and David Wardell for the beautiful photos/vid. And of course, thank you to all the listeners – early and recent – for whom this is all for."
