about

Always Begun Again is the second single from Ancient Air's new EP out in May 2022.

Ancient Air is the recording project of Melbourne-based composer/producer, Jill Farrar. Farrar uses novel and improvised recording techniques – fusing string and vessel resonances – to reimagine more traditional song form. Her work moves within ambient, indie-classical and experimental genres.

The song's name Always Begun Again is drawn from a Clive James poem Sunset Hails a Rising, which in turn borrowed the line from Paul Valéry’s famous poem, Le Cimetière marin. ‘La mer, la mer, toujours recommencée,’ wrote Valéry.

"This is a special song for me. It feels like a conversation – a back-and-forth between two friends, perhaps two lovers. The song is bookended by a recording from Lord Howe Island – a spontaneous percussion jam using beach coral with myself and two most-loved people, Anthony and Laura, back in a brief un-lockdown in 2020," said Farrar.

"When I play this song on the piano, my hands constantly cross over, speaking to each other. The vocal–string resonances drift like mist. The song also draws inspiration from Ethiopiques 21 – Ethiopia Song by Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou.

"I've always seen this as an ocean song – a song about cycles and waves and neverendingness."
